As a parent, one of the best ways to ensure your child enjoys a lifetime of healthy teeth is by helping them establish good dental hygiene habits early. At Southbridge Dentistry and Implants, we understand that getting kids excited about brushing can sometimes be a challenge. Here are four fun ways to keep your child engaged and make brushing a positive experience.
A great way to get your child excited about brushing is by letting them choose their own toothbrush. Whether it’s in their favorite colour or features a beloved cartoon character, a child-size, soft-bristled brush can make brushing more enjoyable. The more your child likes their toothbrush, the more likely they are to use it.
Kids’ taste preferences are different from adults', and many children find mint toothpaste too strong. Consider allowing your child to pick out a kid-friendly toothpaste with flavours like fruity, bubble gum, or soft mint. When their toothpaste tastes good, your child will be more willing to brush for the full two minutes.
Two minutes can feel like forever to a child! Help them stay focused by using a timer to track their brushing. Options include a fun sand timer, a manual stopwatch, or even a digital app on a phone or tablet if they’re old enough. Letting your child control the timer can keep them more engaged and confident in their brushing routine.
Children look up to their parents, and brushing together can encourage your child to follow your example. When you brush your teeth alongside your child, they learn proper brushing techniques and understand that dental hygiene is important. This shared routine can reinforce good habits and make brushing a fun, bonding experience.
